As a punishment for not accepting the rule of the new monarchs William and Mary quickly enough, 38 men of Clan MacDonald were killed in their beds or as they tried to flee by guests who had accepted their hospitality the night before. The guests were men from Clan Campbell, a rival clan. More than 40 women and children eventually died from exposure after their homes were burned down around them.
