11. National Gallery of Art – Washington, D.C., USA
The National Gallery of Art was opened in Washington D.C. following a joint resolution from Congress in 1937. Its original building was built by John Russell Pope, with the new East Building, designed by famed architect I. M. Pei, added 1978.
The museum houses the United States’ massive collection of art, including works by Raphael, El Greco, Degas, Mary Cassatt, and Edvard Munch. It also encompasses a large outdoor sculpture garden, which spans over six acres. The museum received 4.2 million visitors in 2012 alone, all of whom entered for free thanks to the support of both the U.S. government and private donors.
