Weirdest Ceremonies from Other Cultures
Rumspringa
Imagine being given a choice of whether you want to follow in the steps of your family’s faith, or chose a new faith for yourself — or none at all! This is the choice given to young Amish teenagers. The Amish believe in adult baptism only because it is their thought that a child cannot possibly know how to follow the tenets and strictures of a religion, and thus are too young to commit to baptism. Young adults in the Amish community are sent into the world outside of their community for Rumspringa, with the intention for them to experience as much of the non-Amish world as possible. If their choice is to return to the Amish, they come back to their family and are baptized. If they don’t wish to come back, they stay in the modern world.
