Weirdest Ceremonies from Other Cultures

Land Diving in Vanuatu

In Vanuatu, a small island located in the South Pacific, land diving is considered a key part of their culture and is an important aspect of the male coming of age ritual. Land diving involves jumping off a large platform with a piece of vine tied to your foot. The length of the vine has to be very carefully calculated, and needs to take the age of the vine into account in order to know how much it will stretch. Young boys start land diving at around 7-8 years old, and with every dive their mother will display a childhood toy, then throw it away if the dive was successful. Once they have reached adulthood, men jump off extremely high towers in order to show off their masculinity.
