Adult Circumcision
Young men of the Maasai tribe start their initiation into manhood at about 10 years old. Young men between the ages of 10 and 20 are separated from their families and trained by older men in the ways of the warriors, living and learning together. Before their initiation, they spend the night in the forest outside of their community, then return to get circumcised. The young men are given plenty of meat and a special drink of alcohol, cow’s blood, and milk, then undergo circumcision. In order to prove their bravery, they attempt to undergo the ceremony without flinching.
