Apache Sunrise Ceremony
The Apache coming of age ceremony for women in their native tongue is called Na’ii’ees, but in English has come to be known as the Sunrise Ceremony. In this ceremony, women are instructed in the origin myth of their people, and their first female ancestor, White Painted Woman. The ceremony takes place over four days, and during that time, the young girls are not able to wash or touch their own skin. They drink water from special tubes to limit skin-to-skin contact. As part of the culmination of the ceremony, the women re-enact the Apache Origin myth, and when it is finished, they return to their community as women.
