8. Everyone Speaks English
No, not even a little! Assuming that wherever you go someone will be able to speak English is a rookie Euro backpacker mistake. Yes, it is common that people will be able to speak their local language and at least a bit of English, but by no means is it a given. Certain countries (ahem, France) won’t even try to speak English even if they can — le sigh. Travelers need to make sure they know the basics of each language they will be encountering before setting out.
