The World in Pumpkin Dishes

Pumpkin Pie

Perhaps the most famous and best loved pumpkin dish in the world is the mighty pumpkin pie, which many people wrongly assume comes from the United States. In fact, pumpkin pie originated in the United Kingdom and was noted in recipe books that date back to the 17th century. When settlers traveled to America from the United Kingdom, they took the dish with them where it became a staple at Thanksgiving dinner celebrations.

Pumpkin pie is made by cooking pumpkin and mixing it with condensed milk and a spice mix made up of nutmeg, cloves, allspice, mace, ginger, and cinnamon. This is usually creamed together with eggs and sugar, and then the mix is added to a pie shell. Everything is then baked to create one of the most famous and delicious pies in the world.
