The World in Breakfast Dishes
Often called the most important meal of the day, many people still skip breakfast altogether. Be it because of time (who has the time to make toast when you’re already 15 minutes late?), lack of appetite, or even just an empty fridge.
For those of us who don’t skip breakfast, it’s usually cereal, toast … maybe some bacon and eggs on the weekends. Many places around the world treat breakfast completely different, though. We’ve collected some of our favorite breakfasts from around the world. Whether you’re looking for something extravagant, or a tasty grab-and-go, check out the list below.
Jok – Thailand
Jok is quite a popular breakfast food in Thailand. It is essentially rice porridge, usually served with an egg and some meatballs made of pork. For those who like it well seasoned, it also comes with slices of ginger and some cilantro. Served hot, this savory dish is popular all around the country. It is not exclusive to breakfast either – many like to enjoy it for lunch or as an afternoon snack. Yum!
Other breakfast dishes include the Thai equivalent of a bowl of cereal and milk – khao tom. It’s somewhat similar to jok, but more of a soup than a porridge. The rice is boiled and then cooked in a soup, before it is seasoned and the other ingredients are added. It usually comes with seafood or fish instead of pork, although that too is an option. This one is a favorite in the Bangkok area!
