15. Tatacoa Desert – Colombia
The Tatacoa Desert is one of Colombia’s most arid regions. It’s actually a dry tropical forest, so instead of sand dunes, you’re more likely to find a maze of rocky canyons. The area is popular for camping trips, but many travelers go there to gaze at the stars.
In fact, due to being very close to the equatorial line, the desert is an excellent location to explore the night sky. It attracts amateur astronomers from all over the world, who flock to the famous observatory near Villavieja, to learn about the history of the constellations.
