Svalbard, Norway
This Norwegian archipelago, remote in the Arctic Ocean, is located about half way between mainland Norway and the North Pole. Svalbard has an estimated population of 2,700 inhabitants, and was initially used as a whaling outpost.
Today, one of the most interesting things about Svalbard is that it is home to a global seed vault opened by the Norwegian government in 2008. Seeds from across the globe are sent to this long-term storage repository, and are kept in cold, dry rock vaults. Among the seeds stored here are thousands of varieties of staple food crops, including beans, wheat, and rice.
