Architectural Brilliance: The World’s Most Breathtaking Bridges

Pont du Gard, France

The Pont du Gard, located in Southern France, is another relic of ancient civilization. The arch bridge design harkens all the way back to the ancient Romans. It’s estimated that construction of the 275-meter bridge was completed somewhere between 40 and 60 A.D.

The Pont du Gard is actually an ancient Roman aqueduct (a bridge designed for the purpose of conveying water over an obstacle), built as part of the Nimes aqueduct to transfer water from an Uzes spring to the nearby Roman colony. The bridge was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list in 1985.
