Architectural Brilliance: The World’s Most Breathtaking Bridges
| October 8, 2018
Pearl Bridge, Japan
Japan’s Pearl Bridge, or Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, unites the mainland city of Kobe to the Awaji Island. And it’s far from your average suspension bridge. This one owns the distinction of having the longest central span of any suspension bridge in the entire world, at 1.237 miles.
The bridge is on the newer side, completed in 1998. It was constructed in response to the 1955 storm-induced sinking of two passenger ferries. The crash resulted in 168 deaths and forced the Japanese government’s hand.
