To simply claim that China’s decision to construct the Hangzhou Bay Bridge was bold would diminish the monumental achievement of this not-so-humble architectural marvel. For starters, consider the bridge’s location – the Hangzhou Bay is far from a stable water body. Earthquakes, typhoons, and strong tidal forces should keep even the discussion of bridge construction “at bay.” But here we are.

In spite of Mother Nature, the Hanzhou Bay Bridge stretches 22 miles, making it the longest ocean-crossing bridge in the world. And the prospect of window-gazing out at the endless expanse of tumultuous water is probably going to give me nightmares.
