Ouzo
Invented by 14th century Greek monks, ouzo is a sweet, anise-flavored liquor that has been representative of Greek tastes in alcohol since the late 1800s. Although it has been continuously in use since it was invented, it experienced a huge surge in popularity after Greek independence.
It’s served in shots, or mixed with water, at which point good ouzo will become cloudy white or even light blue.
