Sati is a now-obsolete funerary practice which involved the widow of a deceased man killing herself during or shortly after his funeral. Most places in India banned the practice in the 19th century, but only took active measures to prevent it in the 20th century, after a public sati in 1987 caused a major outcry and dozens of arrests.
