11. Dead Man Standing
A unique tradition that’s gaining in popularity in Puerto Rico is the practice of including the embalmed body of the deceased in the wake, instead of leaving them in a coffin. These Puerto Rican families are choosing to celebrate the things that the deceased loved by turning the wakes into parties rather than somber occasions.
In one wake held in 2016, the family put the body on his favorite chair, and completed the look with a lit cigarette. Although the remains look somewhat lifelike, there’s a peculiar waxiness to the body that can be off-putting.
