Many Buddhist sects practice a form of burial where the remains of the deceased are left on mountaintops to be devoured by carrion birds and scavenging animals. This practice, known as “sky-burial,” supports the Buddhist theory of the transmigration of spirits – that the body is merely a vessel for the spirit, and after the death of the spirit, the body is returned to nature via decomposition or consumption.
In the mountains of practicing countries like Tibet, Mongolia, and India, it’s one of the most practical burial techniques since the hard ground doesn’t support the digging of traditional graves.
