7. Finger amputation
Within the Dani tribe of Papua, Indonesia, the practice of finger amputation has been practiced for generations but is slowly fading into antiquity. Traditionally, one fingertip of each women who was close to the deceased is removed, as a way to appease the spirits. It’s also thought that this ritual was a way for the person left alive to physically express their emotional pain. The practice is banned now, but it’s not uncommon to see older women with no fingertips.
