13. Hanging Coffins

In some parts of Asia, indigenous people, like the Bo of southern China or the Sa’dan Toraja people of Indonesia, practice a custom that involves hanging the coffins of the deceased over the side of steep mountain cliffs. Practically, this prevents the bodies from being consumed by wild animals. Spiritually, hanging the coffin out in the elements is thought to eternally bless the soul of the deceased. These unique coffins can be found in precariously hanging groups in mountainous areas all over China, Indonesia, and the Philippines, and sometimes even in caves.
