The Door to Hell

This landmark looks like it belongs in Mordor, but it actually exists in Turkmenistan and is called the Darvaza Crater, otherwise known as “The Door to Hell.” 40 years ago, this fiery sinkhole appeared in the desert, and although it is a natural occurrence, human error likely had a hand in its creation. It’s thought that a team of Soviet scientists caused the 230-ft. wide hole by way of a drilling error, and then attempted to light the escaping methane gas on fire in hopes that it would burn off. Instead, it turned into a flaming fiery crater that continues to burn to this day.
