Snow chimneys
“Snow chimney” is the nickname that’s been giving to these whimsical looking formations that appear on Mount Erebus in Antarctica, the southernmost active volcano on the planet. Hundreds of ice towers known as “fumaroles” dot the sides of the volcano. Heat escapes through them, melting the snow above it and creating a cave. The escaping steam then shapes the snow into a “snow chimney” and pours out the top. Some of these incredible ice towers can grow as tall as 60 feet high.
