13. The Basilica of St. Francis, Assisi
The central church of the Franciscan Friars, the Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi is located in the Town of Assisi, in Umbria. Pope Gregory IX laid the foundation stone of the church the day after Francis was canonized. Inside are frescoes executed by some of the most famous late Medieval painters, done in honor of St. Francis of Assisi.
