12. Saturday Sweets
The tradition behind Lördagsgodis is actually pretty dark. In the 1940s and 1950s, patients at a Swedish mental hospital were force-fed large quantities of candy to determine whether sugar caused cavities. The results of this study alarmed scientists, who recommended that Swedish children only be given candy once a week — hence, the institution of the Saturday sweets tradition (Lördagsgodis).
