Iceland: The Land of the Midnight Sun

10. Grafarkirkja
This ornate church, built entirely out of wood and sod in the late 17th century, was once used for a tool shed shortly after being decommissioned. It seems hard to believe that someone could ignore the building’s astounding beauty, but for years it languished unappreciated until the National Museum of Iceland had the building entirely re-built and opened it to visitors in 1950. Although there are many small churches like this one scattered around Iceland, this one is unique because of the ornately carved interior hidden inside the blocks of sod that make up the exterior walls.
