Iceland: The Land of the Midnight Sun

11. Grjotagja
Normally when people find a fissure in the ground, they find nothing but mud and rocks at the bottom of it. Not so in Iceland, where ordinary cracks in the ground lead to spectacular hot springs and a cave above that lets in just the perfect amount of light. Although the hot springs were off limits for several years in the 1970s due to rising temperature from an overactive nearby volcano, now the water temperature has been deemed to be safe and visitors are once again travelling for miles to take a dip. Grjótagjá was even used as a filming location for Game of Thrones — it’s the place where Jon Snow and his wildling lover Ygritte eventually (spoiler alert!) consummate their relationship.
