The Most Unique Airports in the World

6. Cristiano Ronaldo Madeira International Airport

Named after the legendary soccer player who was born here, the airport in Madeira is unique not only because of its name, but because of the geographic features that make landing there a challenge.

It was previously home to one of the shortest runways in the world, until they expanded it in 2002. In its original iteration, the runway extended to the end of the shore, but in 2002, they built a massive bridge and then extended the runway over the bridge to a nearby rocky outcropping. The airport is also home to this infamous bust of Cristiano Ronaldo — the one where his face looks like it just melted.
