A two hour flight from the 2016 Olympic host city, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador is fraught with violence due to its growing local drug market. Analysts have also attributed Salvador’s rising violence to an influx of firearms, income inequality, rampant corruption in the city’s government, and an influx of people moving to the city looking for work, according to the NYT.
