Mascot Overload: Japan’s Obsession with Mascots
| April 9, 2018
2. Yachinyan
Japan has a long history of being obsessed with cats, and this dates back thousands of years when upper-class families in the country had these cuddly felines as domesticated pets. They are still quite popular in Japan today (just look at Hello Kitty), and this is where Yachinyan creates a strong presence.
This fury friend is the mascot for Yonbancho Square shopping street, in Hikone, Shiga Prefecture. Donning hashtags as cheeks, two pigtails, with a busy outfit filled with accessories, Yachinyan clearly loves to shop and appeals to a younger generation.
