Mascot Overload: Japan’s Obsession with Mascots
| April 9, 2018
1. Gunma-chan
This mascot has a history that can be linked back to the early 80s, with the recent design of Gunma-chan established in 2008. Representing the Gunma prefecture, the horse character design is meant to symbolize this area’s history around being the country’s first horse-breeding region.
Interestingly enough, he always dons a green hat, but his vests do vary. He’s also expression-less, without a mouth to indicate if he is happy or sad. Regardless of how he feels, Gunma-chan well-loved!
