Gnarled and Wise: The Worlds Oldest Living Inhabitants

5. Llangernyw Yew

One of the few trees to have earned a place on the 2002 list of 50 Great British Trees, this gigantic yew tree located in the Welsh town of Llangernyw is nothing short of majestic. Originally planted during the Bronze Age (scientists estimate its age between 4,000 and 5,000 years old), the huge tree currently sits in front of St. Dygain’s Church, spreading its shade over the nearby graveyard. This tree figures prominently in a local legend. Some believe that there is a spirit living in the tree who can predict which church members will die within the following year. The spirit makes this uncanny announcement every year on — you guessed it — Halloween.
