Gnarled and Wise: The Worlds Oldest Living Inhabitants

8. The Senator
This tree, affectionately called “The Senator”, is considered to be the oldest bald cypress on Earth. It’s also the tallest tree east of the Mississippi River, and for centuries was used as a guidepost and landmark for local Native American tribes. Unfortunately, the tree collapsed in 2012 after a fire — one of many that it endured over its known lifetime. In 1925, a hurricane knocked down some of its upper branches, and reduced its size by 40 feet. Even then, it was still the tallest tree in that area. Located in the same park is the only known tree of comparable size — a fellow bald cypress called “Lady Liberty.”
