7. Jōmon Sugi
Jōmon Sugi is a fantastically old tree located on Yakushima Island, in the Kagoshima Prefecture of Japan. Although scientists agree that the tree is extremely old, no one is exactly sure how old this Cryptomeria tree really is. Evidence has been given for ages anywhere between 2,170 and 7,200 years old. The discovery of this 83-foot tree in 1968 led to a massive push for more sustainable forestry practices in the area, and also contributed to the blossoming of the tourism industry on Yakushima Island.
