Go for Gold: Abandoned Olympic Venues

Various Venues – Rio

Sometimes, it only takes a few post-Olympic months for buildings to be abandoned outright. Such is the case with many of the Olympic venues scattered around Brazil. In the six months following the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, many of the costly sports venues have fallen into disrepair.

The Maracanã Stadium in Rio received a $370 million renovation in preparation for the Games. Now, the grass is brown and the seats are rusted. Instead of re-purposing the canoe slalom venue as initially planned, it sits vacant. Plus, the Arena of the Future is closed, and the tennis court at the Olympic Park is covered in sand. It’s an argument for the mismanagement of assets that so often follows the Olympic Games.
