Go for Gold: Abandoned Olympic Venues
| January 8, 2018
Athlete’s Village – Turin
The 2006 Winter Olympics came and went. Billions were spent on new venues to accommodate the competitions and an athlete’s village to house the competitors. The Games went without a hitch and the athletes moved on, leaving the athlete’s village without a tenant. The buildings sat vacant for years and were all but abandoned — but that’s far from the end of the tale.
A surge of refugees from Libya and Somalia found a new use for the village. Now, instead of lying vacant, the buildings are housing those fleeing war and persecution. So, no, technically this athlete’s village isn’t abandoned anymore, but it’s a heartwarming story. And we can all use a heartwarming story every once in a while.
