Go for Gold: Abandoned Olympic Venues

Softball Stadium – Athens

As if we haven’t beat up on the abandoned Greek venues enough, we return to Athens and the now abandoned softball stadium. Once housing thousands of spectators and a handful of the best softball players from around the world, the Olympic softball stadium at the Hellinikon Olympic Complex in Athens is far from game ready.

The grass is overgrown, the seats are dusty, and the building is a shell of its 2004 Olympic self. Greece spent nearly $9.5 billion preparing for the 2004 Summer Olympics, and now all they have to show for it is a negative account balance and a field full of weeds.
