Dholavira – India
This elaborate fortified city located on Khadir Bet Island in western India was a bustling city for over 1200 years, and is one of the last remnants of the Indus Valley Civilization. Built around 2650 BC, the ruins of Dholavira show a well thought out city with zones for agriculture, commercial, and residential activities, as well as highly advanced wastewater disposal and water conservation systems.
Historians cannot say for sure why the city was evacuated, but speculate that the harsh climate and changing sea levels may have been factors in its abandonment.
