Shahr-e Sukhteh – Iran
The name of this mudbrick settlement located in Iran means “Burnt City” and it was thought to have once been a major Middle Eastern trade route stop during the Bronze Age. Shahr-e Sukhteh was first built in 3200 BC and was home to ancient Iranians until around 1800 BC.
Archaeologists believe that the city’s dwellers were forced to leave when their main water source was diverted elsewhere, but the well-preserved ruins left behind tell a story of how early urban societies functioned and interacted with one another.
