Newgrange – Ireland
Each year on the winter solstice this Stone Age passage tomb found in County Meath, Ireland attracts such a large gathering of tourists that curators are forced to hold an annual lottery for those hoping to get a spot inside the chamber. That’s because for just 17 minutes on the shortest day of the year, the sun aligns with a hole in the roof of the chamber, flooding the tomb with light.
Experts believe that this unique circular tomb dates back to 3200 BC and, although they haven’t yet uncovered its true purpose, they believe that its unique relationship with the heavens signifies that it was much more than just a typical passage grave.
