Travel Destinations to Avoid in 2018

Machu Picchu, Peru

Located high in the Andes Mountains of Peru, this 15th Century Incan fort is about as far flung as a tourist destination can get, but that hasn’t stopped the crowds from coming. This “Lost City of the Incas” grew so popular that it saw 16 million visitors in 2016 and while most were on their best behaviour, others were damaging the UNESCO World Heritage Site by climbing and marking the structures. In an effort to preserve this rare landmark, visitors now must purchase timed entry permits in advance in order to gain access to the site and must visit with a guided tour rather than on their own.
