Travel Destinations to Avoid in 2018
Santorini, Greece
With its picturesque island views, golden sunsets, and white washed, azure accented skyline, it’s no wonder Santorini is the most popular of the Greek isles with well off tourists. While the economically depressed country certainly welcomes the added income, Santorini locals — many of whom are struggling financially themselves — aren’t too keen on sharing their outdated infrastructure with the fabulously wealthy visitors the island seems to attract.
In 2017, Santorini mayor Nikolaos Zorzos announced that he would be capping the number of cruise ship tourists allowed to disembark onto the island at just 8000 per day and has asked Greek authorities to consider slowing construction in order to save the island’s remaining natural beauty.
