If you think human sacrifices only occur in underdeveloped countries, think again. A 19-year-old man named Moises Meraz-Esperanza was arrested in Los Angeles for the 2011 murder of his mother in what he claimed was a Satanic ritual. Meraz-Esperanza turned himself into the police, admitting to having killed, skinned and dismembered his mother on a day reserved for sacrifice in the Satanic calendar.

The victim’s severed head was discovered with the eyes and teeth plucked out and upside down crosses carved into the bone. Meraz-Esperanza was convicted in 2013 and is currently serving 25 to life in prison.
