It’s a longstanding notion in African spiritualism that the body parts of albinos are thought to possess special powers that can be used in medicines and rituals. This had led to extreme persecution of albinos, who are often murdered and dismembered by or for witch doctors, particularly in Tanzania where an estimated 80 albinos have been killed since 2000.

In 2015, there was a major crackdown on these types of crimes, leading to the arrest of more than 200 spiritualist practitioners who’ve been involved in the ritual killings of albinos.
