Riots and political unrest followed a series of murders in Zambia in 2016 that were thought to have been committed by foreigners to secure body parts as good luck charms. The bodies of seven people were found over the course of several months with their ears, hearts and genitals removed, prompting locals to blame Rwandan refugees who’d recently migrated to the area. In Lusaka, hundreds of homes and businesses owned by foreigners were damaged and looted and two people were burned to death in retaliation for the killings.
