Belief in the religious cult of Santa Muerte has been spreading in recent years, leading to a rash of human sacrifices in Nacozari in 2012. Police allege that a family of Santa Muerte worshippers kidnapped two 10-year-old boys and a 55-year-old woman, cut their wrists and throats and spread their blood on an altar before burying the remains outside of their home.
