The World in Donuts

10. Loukoumades

Loukoumades are a decadent Greek treat. Small, ping-pong ball-sized pieces of dough are deep-fried, then left to soak in honey syrup. Unlike other kinds of donuts that are also soaked in syrup, loukoumades are left in the syrup until they’re served, which makes them both incredibly sweet and very messy. Wrapped up in wax paper, and garnished with a generous sprinkling of cinnamon, they’re usually sold by the dozen.

If you’re buying for a crowd, make sure you get at least a few dozen as it’s impossible to eat just one. One of the best bakeries for loukoumades is Krinos, in Athens, which has been churning these out since 1922.
