The World in Donuts

Pączki are Polish donuts that are made from an extremely rich dough, resulting in deliciously soft pastries. Typically, Poles fill their pączki with wild rose hip or stewed plum jam, but pączki in other countries may contain jam more typical to that culture.

Pączki are a staple of the day known alternately as Fat Thursday (Tłusty Czwartek) or simply, Pączki Day. It is the last Thursday before Ash Wednesday, which signals the start of Lent. Polish chefs would make pączki in order to use up the remaining butter, sugar, fat, and eggs in the house, which were all forbidden during Lent.
