The World in Donuts

9. Oliebollen
Oliebollen directly translates into English as “oil spheres,” which is a very accurate description of what donuts basically are. Oliebollen are found all over the Netherlands and Belgium. Their dough is more similar to dumplings, but they’re deep fried in the same way as donuts. Oliebollen usually contain raisins, currants, or even candied fruit. They’re extremely popular around Christmastime, when you can find them at Christmas Markets and festivals, served alongside a cup of hot mulled wine.
