8. Yaniqueques
Yaniqueques have an interesting etymology as the word comes from the English “johnnycake,” which itself is a mispronunciation of the phrase “journey cake.” Yaniqueques, which are a popular Dominican street snack, are similar to the North American johnnycake — a fried cornmeal cake that’s flat, dense, and an excellent way to use up pantry staples. However, yaniqueques are made of a lighter dough, which is then deep-fried, giving it an excellent crunch.
