The World in Soda

Inca Kola
In 1935, an immigrant to Peru created what quickly became the country’s most popular soft drink—Inca Kola. Its bright yellow color is often off-putting to the uninitiated, but once you give it a chance, you’ll be won over by its bubbly, sweet taste which is derived from lemon verbena. It’s classified as a typical ‘champagne cola’—a confusing category that encompasses neither champagne nor soda. Champagne cola is a light soft drink produced in Latin or South America whose taste is comparable to bubble gum or cream soda. Inca Kola, although it was produced by British family company Lindley, quickly became their primary brand and most popular offering.
